1981, in Serbia, I am hiding behind the cow shed with a collection of flowers I picked from my grandmothers garden. There is a scrap book with petals between the pages and a rock on top to press them dry. Next to the book is a glass bottle with murky liquid I squeezed out of different plants. This is my studio, between the old bricks and haystacks, the sounds of farm animals and smells form my grandmothers flowers. From an early age I was fascinated with the collaboration between creating things, capturing the smells, preserving the memories. Today I try to do that with photographs.
Here is how “Elle Decoration” magazine got in touch with local artists and inspired a collaboration for our photoshoot in a studio. The artists from different crafts got together and built one studio set. Some fun and exciting things happen when creative minds meet in one space.
Michael Chandler, from “Chandler House”, and Emma Frost, a florist at “Supernatural”, used decor and flowers to recreate Matisses studio from a still life painting.
Chloe Townsend, Lizel Strydom, Robyn Silberbauer, from “Missibaba” and Maggie Roberts, from “Mer” played with the floral patterns in the leather bag and the collage to build a set for us.
Atang Tshikare, specialises in urban style surface design. His work is integrated into many different artworks, from textile to sunglasses. Together with Pim Verdoorn, from “Leon at CCXIX” , they created the furniture with cityscape motif for our shoot.
Local art scene is rich with an abundance of artists. I was inspired by the people in these stories “Elle Decoration” magazine did and went on a journey into the local art world. Later, Marushka Stipinovic from “Elle Decoration” and I travel around the Cape to capture some more artists stories…..
