In the name of Love & Rockets

Bauhaus, beatnik writers and punk set roots into my Serb soul way back in the 90’s. Thats how it all began for me and many other teenagers of our generation.

This story starts with the Hernandez brothers. They self-published their first issue of Love and Rockets in 1981. It was one of the pioneer comics in the alternative comic revolution in the 80’s. There are two prominent stories. “Palomar” , also known as  “Heartbreak Soup” , was named after the main story set in the fictional village in Latin America. And “Hoppers 13”, was called “Locas” because of its many quirky female characters. Gilbert and Jamie Hernandez stories follow the characters from early days of California punk scene to present day.

Round about that time, gothic rock icons, Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins, former members of “Bauhaus”, formed a goth punk band and called it “Love and Rockets”. The name was a tribute to Hernandez comic book series. The album titled  “New Tales to Tell: A tribute to Love and Rockets” features contributions from bands The Flaming Lips, Frank Black, Puscifer, The Dandy Warhols and The Stone Foxes amongst others.  Still today I love their song “Haunted when the minutes drag” , a collage of words that create a photograph, an image of your loved one, millions of faces in one song.

“And this is for when you feel…….something”

For all the legends in our lives, come and gone, for our mothers and fathers, for our daughters and sons, for the passionate lovers and the lonely ones, this is for all the memories made and stories told to never be forgotten with passage of time.

This is the birth of Love & Rockets. These are your and my stories, a collection of memories…..
